Occupation: Disability Policy Consultant
Professional Profile: Since 1997 I have been a consultant with my
own shop - People Support Network of NJ. My major funding comes from the NJ DD
Council. I work to release and prepare people in our state ICFMR's to return to
community living per our Olmstead State Plan (such as it is).
PSN also works in
self-advocacy, creating "easy language" materials and recently we have begun to
work on domestic and other violence's against women with disabilities.
From
1990-1998 I worked for UCP of NJ and then NJ DD Council as a
disability advocate. During this time I worked on the closure of two of our
development centers. Pryor to that I worked as an assistant director for an IL
program and I am a founding member of a CIL located outside Trenton.
Presently, I
am a member of our state IL Council, Women with Disabilities Health Task
Force, the Personal Assistance Services Advisory Council, NJ MiCASSA Coalition. A
group of us are in the process of forming a NJ ADAPT and I have been involved
with ADAPT actions for the past couple of years.
My volunteer work and interests
are women with disabilities issues particularly parenting, sexuality and aging
and inclusive worship. I have been married for 24 years, we have two grown
children who have learning disabilities (one is a chef, the other works for
Comcast News - no thanks to our school district) and my youngest sister has
Downs so disability is definitely part of my life. Lately I've been dealing with
aging, pain and some minor secondary conditions issues. Otherwise my husband and
I lead a quiet boring life with our dog Missy. I am very excited about becoming a member of the
CP Group.

disabilities reach gainful employment. CHOICE was in five cities including Pittsburgh, Detroit, and New Orleans. Each site had a coordinator and I was fortunate to be the coordinator for the New Orleans area. Over the years, especially during the CHOICE YEARS, I was lucky to meet with other disabled persons like myself in this area and across Louisiana and the Nation. I am telling you because I would like to write and sell articles on people with
disabilities. Should your magazine, or if you know of a magazine, that would be interested in this, please let me know. Also, should you want more info on me just ask.

Professional Profile: Matthew Rich Jr grew up listening to all types of music,
but Country Music is what called to him the most. He remembers his father always singing Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Hank Jr, Marty Robbins, George Jones, and many others.
As Matthew grew up he would Fall in love with the musical styles of Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Randy Travis. He would find himself singing along with his heroes all the time, but he never dreamed of being a singer, Matthew had dreams of helping handicapped children; he was born with Cerebral Palsy and he knew he wanted to make a difference.
In 2002 he became a volunteer for a school in New Jersey for handicapped children. In 2003 Matthew would get a paid position as the schools music teacher and has been working there to present day,
and he continues to bring smiles to the children’s' faces. At the same time he started working at the school, he began to write his own songs. Songwriting would lead him to new dreams of musicianship.
In addition to being a musician he has also volunteered as a Motivational Speaker for the United Way, since 2004. He vows to donate money to organizations for Cerebral Palsy and Breast Cancer Research. In addition to all his volunteer work, Matthew has released an album entitled Joe The Corona Man (2005).

Occupation: Disability Program Navigator
Professional Profile: As the Disability Program Navigator at CONNECT! Job Seeker Center I have been able to build further upon my skills as a disAbility advocate. I have spent time working with staff on issues of disclosure and assistance. I have also been a guide as people got back on the employment track. This was done with recommendations of services within the county and peer support and advice. I have taken my basic knowledge of the system and developed it further by meeting key figures in the community and studying the disability movement more thoroughly. As a CalSafe AmeriCorps fellow, I have worked in the emergency/disaster related fields. I have authored a PowerPoint entitled “Are You Ready to Rock and Roll?” detailing the different particulars that a person with a disability must pay attention to. This year I was able to take a leadership position in the first annual Emergency Preparedness for Persons with Functional limitations. This conference, the first of its kind, focuses on disaster/emergency training for vulnerable populations. For the conference, I ran outreach, logistics, training and representations at press conferences. I have also taken an ASL course and learned more about the Deaf culture. I realize the need to have a plan in place and how important it is to have a level playing field.

Professional Profile: I have an MBA (\'90) and BA in political science (\'81), both from Binghamton University. In addition to my sound educational background, I have strong communication skills. Unfortunately, I have not been able to utilize these
qualities as I have lived in assisted living facilities for the majority of my life and have not been surrounded by people who were willing to advocate on my behalf with regard to exploring potential opportunities where I may be of service to others. This being said, I now realize that I must self-advocate in order to be of benefit to others as well as to myself. I sincerely desire to work in a capacity to help others diagnosed with CP as I know first hand how frustrating and isolating life can be living with this condition.

Occupation: Public Affairs Specialist, Writer/Editor, Webmaster
Professional Profile: Federal Government civil servant with almost 25 years of experience in the realm of Public Affairs, including writing and editing, graphic design, desktop publishing, and developing and maintaining websites. Many years ago I was a Congressional staffer and was fortunate to be the liaison in our office for the Americans With Disabilities Act. More recently, I was the Section 508 coordinator for my Agency. Generally speaking, however, my career has not been centered on disability issues or advocacy. Today, as an aging individual with CP, I am interested in learning more about how to manage my disability and meet the (ever increasing) challenges that it poses. I have been frustrated by a lack of information about adults with disabilities and the impact of aging. I hope to benefit and learn from this association with the CP Group, to help me maintain my independence and health for as long as possible.

Professional Profile: I graduated from Frostburg State University in 1990 with a BS Degree in Economics. In 1993, I was a Legislative Analyst for the U.S. House of Representative, Subcommittee on Select Education and Civil Right. I developed an ADA compliance outline to evaluate the accessibility of Federally owned and/or operated buildings. Conducted accessibility compliance surveys in Congressional Buildings. Advised staff on legislative policy development and oversight regarding the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA.
Additionally, I have worked with other disability organizations, such as the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, American Association of University Affiliated Programs, and National Organization on Disability.
In June, 2002 I had surgery for my spinal cord injury. I had several discs removed from my neck and had a bone fusion. I lost all control of my body functions: sitting up, using my fingers, crawling, and even speaking for a very long time. I have been working on regaining all of my functions for the last three years and I have regained most of them back. The last hurdle I'm working on is to get up from my stomach to my knees independently as I used to be able to do. Hopefully within a year I can be an active member of the disability community once again.
